Some Technical terms in web development

DUE TO TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS, INNUMERABLE NEW TECHNICAL TERMS HAVE DEVELOPED ON THE INTERNET IN RECENT YEARS.

So that you understand the meaning of the technical terms in discussions with the experts, in web development, we have created a small overview for our customers. With this background knowledge, technical problems can be better discussed and understood. We have simplified the explanations so much that a basic understanding can be built up. The definitions are not to be understood as a detailed explanation.

 

What does drag’n’drop mean?

Drag and drop stand for dragging and dropping. With the drag-and-drop function, you can click elements and move or copy them with the mouse button pressed.

What is the administration panel?

Our administration panel helps to manage the website directly via the interface. You can edit the page content, add new images, documents and videos, change the status, view page information, and much more.

What is an intranet?

An intranet is a company-internal platform for the exchange of information and data.

What is a CMS?

A content management system (CMS for short, German content management system) is software for managing the content of a website. Ie you can manage content without technical knowledge.

What are modules?

A module is a self-contained unit of software that fulfills an individual function.

Examples: contact form or an interactive Google Maps site plan.

What is a user-centered design?

In German: user-oriented design. It aims to design interactive products in such a way that they have a high degree of usability. This means nothing other than that the user of a product with his tasks, goals, and properties is placed at the center of the development process.

What is a user?

In German: user. The future use of a digital service (e.g. website or online shop) is named in the design process.

What is HTML

HTML is a text-based markup language (Hypertext Markup Language) and forms the basic framework (source text) for creating a website.

What is CSS

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is used to design websites: font size, font color, alignment, spacing, etc.

What is php

PHP is a server-side programming language used to write web pages. A simple example: PHP can process user input that has been entered in a contact form and save it in a database.

What does SSL mean?

The abbreviation “SSL” stands for “Secure Sockets Layer”. Establishes a secure and encrypted connection between the website and the user. In addition, SSL certificates ensure a better ranking with search engines.

What is a front end?

It is what the user sees (the interface). In the case of a website programmed with CMS or a web application, the front end contains all visible content. This also includes the design and layout of the website, images, texts – everything that the user can see.

What is a backend?

The backend is the part of an IT system that deals with data processing in the background – the data layer.

What are templates?

A template is a framework or template that determines the appearance of the website. A template is used to determine where which elements are located on the website. What the font looks like, what proportions the elements have, etc.

What are wireframes?

The conceptual design of a website during the planning phase is referred to as a wireframe. Only the most necessary elements of a homepage are displayed in a wireframe. Design elements and individual functionalities do not yet play a role.

What is a prototype?

In web development, a click dummy is an interactive prototype. The click dummy shows the relevant sub-pages or functions in order to get a better feel for the user guidance when testing the website.

What is content?

The term content describes the sum of all consumable elements such as texts, graphics, images, and images that make up a website. Content is also one of the most important factors in a website’s value.

What are keywords?

Search term, catchphrase, keyword, or keyword, generally denotes a term searched for in a search engine. However, these keywords should have a healthy relationship with the text.

What is responsive web design?

Simply and in a nutshell. The design adapts dynamically to the screen size: the text size is optimized for the respective target device, elements are moved, and can also be operated via touchscreen.

What is SEO

SEO means Search Engine Optimization and describes the optimization of content for search engines. Websites have to be structured in such a way that the analysis by Google and other search engines achieves optimal results. This applies to both the technical and content structure.

What is a domain?

A domain is a globally unique name by which you can be found on the Internet, e.g. www.indual.ch

What is traffic?

In online marketing, traffic describes the number of hits on a website by visitors. More traffic = more visitors. Organic traffic describes the visitors who have found your site through search terms. Google rates high traffic positively.

What is a script?

A script is a programming code that fulfills a certain task. Something that is always done the same and can be repeated at the desired time.

Footer?

The footer is the final part of a website. Often used to display important information, such as contact, newsletter registration, data protection, imprint, etc.
