Almost all latest cars with IC engines are equipped with fuel pumps. The function of the fuel pump is to measure the correct amount of fuel and deliver fuel to the engine cylinder at the correct time in response to changing load and speed requirements.
Most modern vehicle fuel pumps are electric and mounted on fuel tanks. However, some vehicles are equipped with in-line or mechanical fuel pumps.
Symptoms of bad Fuel Pump
The main symptoms of a bad fuel pump are given below:
1) Whining Noise from the Fuel Tank
The main symptom of a fuel pump problem is crying loudly. Old or worn fuel pumps can cause noticeable growls and howls during operation. Most fuel pumps make a low humming noise during normal operation, but excessive hum from the fuel tank is usually a sign of a problem. The system may be out of fuel, the pump may be damaged, or the fuel may be contaminated.
2) Difficulty Starting
The difficult starting of the car is also cause due to bad fuel. When the ignition is turned on, the fuel pump always runs, so over time the fuel pump wears out and becomes weaker. A weak fuel pump can also deliver fuel, but insufficient pressure can make it difficult to start the vehicle. When the fuel pump wears off, the vehicle has to crank more cranks than usual. In more severe cases, you can even turn the key several times to start the vehicle.
3) Loss of Power Under Stress
Another sign of a fuel pump failure is a loss of power when the vehicle is under pressure (e.g. when driving uphill or when carrying heavy objects) or when accelerating. In such cases, the weakened part of the fuel pump cannot meet the increased fuel demand of the car and the engine dies. In these conditions, the car does not feel able to drive or maintain the expected performance. If the cause is the fuel pump, the fuel pressure can no longer be precisely adjusted and the engine can no longer draw the correct amount of fuel.
4) Car Surging
If the internal resistance of the fuel pump motor is uneven, the vehicle will trip and the fuel pump will need to be repaired. The feeling of acceleration is like pressing the accelerator pedal. However, this happens at a random and constant rate. If this happens frequently, there may be a problem with the fuel pump.
5) Car Will Not Start
Another more serious symptom of fuel pump problems is the inability to start. If the fuel pump fails completely (if it cannot deliver enough fuel to the engine) the vehicle will refuse to start. Even when I turn the key, the engine turns but does not start due to lack of fuel. It is highly recommended that you properly diagnose the vehicle as various other problems can cause the starter to fail.
Fuel pumps can be found in almost all vehicles that somehow have an internal combustion engine. Most fuel pumps are long-lasting. However, it is not uncommon for the fuel pump to need to be replaced when driving for a long time. Another reason fuel pumps fail is that cars typically contain less than a quarter of the fuel tank. If your vehicle has any of the symptoms above, or your fuel pump could be defective, have your vehicle checked by a professional technician to determine if the pump needs replacing.
